What to Expect
At Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
Your Initial appointment entails a comprehensive assessment where your physiotherapist will evaluate your strength, flexibility, functional capacity, gait, reflexes, and more. This appraisal helps identify the problem accurately and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Palpation techniques may also be used to examine the injured or affected area.
The assessment and treatment typically lasts between 45-60 minutes. Throughout the process, you’re encouraged to ask any questions. Your physiotherapist will maintain open communication, usually reaching a conclusion towards the end of your assessment.
Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will diagnose your condition or injury. They will inform you about the frequency of your appointments and give you a general idea of the timeline for your recovery.
What Happens After Your First Appointment?
As you wrap up your initial appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to schedule any necessary follow-up appointments.
In the days following your assessment, you might experience some soreness, depending on the variety of tests performed during your examination. This discomfort is temporary, typically subsiding within 24-48 hours. It’s important to keep your body well-nourished and hydrated during this period, as it can help alleviate any residual soreness.
In your subsequent appointments, your physiotherapist will administer treatments to alleviate your symptoms. These might include:
- Manual therapy techniques
- Joint or soft tissue Corticosteroid injection
- Prescribed exercises
- Heat therapy
- Cold therapy
- Acupuncture
- Stretching
- Acupuncture
- Other modalities
